Roads and Trails on the Questa Ranger District Open To Jeeps, ATV’s and Motorcycles
ROADS / TRAILS…
* Cabresto Canyon –from HWY 38 in Questa, turn off on 563 which turns into Forest Road 134. Provides
access to Greenie Peak and several non-working mines.
* Cabresto Lake Road- approximately 7 miles up the Cabresto Canyon road. Turn off the Forest Road 134A
for 2 miles on primitive road to the lake.
*4th of July Canyon (Forest Road 490)- approximately 4 miles from Red River on HWY 578 in upper Red
River Canyon. VERY RUGGED
* Garrapate Ridge – 5 miles south of Questa. Approximately 6 miles loop that connects with Forest Road 9,
which leads to Cebolla Mesa
* Goose Lake (Forest Road 486) – approximately ˝ mile past Eagle Nest turnoff in upper Red River canyon.
Only about 8 miles to the lake on the 4WD Road.
*Largo Lake- 1.3 miles from Questa Ranger Station on Old Taos HWY. Travel 3 miles on National Forest
land to private land; continue for 4 miles through Lama to HWY 22.
* Mallette Canyon- at the NW end of Red River on Mallette Road
*Old Red River Pass (Forest Road 487) – located approximately 1 mile past Eagle Nest turnoff.
*Pioneer Creek- accessible by Red River Ski Area road. Turn right onto road at NE end of ski area parking
lot. Sign indicating turnoff is across the creek. Old mines will be located in the area 3 up.
*Cerro Negro – travel 2 miles on road to Lawrence Ranch to Forest Road 7B. 5-mile loop that connects with
7C.
*Trail Canyon- turnoff is approximately 1˝ miles up Mallette Canyon. Intersects Cabresto Canyon Road after
10 miles
*Elephant Rock- begins west of Red River on HWY 38 near Fawn Lakes Campground. Travels west along
ridge and drops down to Cabresto Road. Open May 25 to October 15.
* Pioneer- begins either at Caribel Mine on Pioneer Road or ˝ way up Goose Lake Road.
